A Level Further Maths is taken alongside A Level Maths by around 15,000 students each year — typically those aiming for mathematics, physics, engineering, or computer science degrees at competitive universities. It is the most challenging A Level and covers content well beyond the standard Maths course.
All students study Core Pure content (complex numbers, matrices, further calculus, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions, differential equations). Beyond Core Pure, students choose optional modules from Further Pure, Further Statistics, Further Mechanics, and Decision Mathematics — the exact options depend on your exam board.
The four boards — Edexcel, AQA, OCR A, and OCR B (MEI) — structure their optional modules differently, so check your specification carefully. This guide covers 20+ resources including teaching platforms, practice papers, enrichment, and university preparation. You can also browse our past papers library for FM papers from all exam boards.

Tier 2 — Supplementary Resources
Dr Frost Maths ★★★★☆
Interactive question bank covering all FM topics with auto-marking and instant feedback. Also includes a searchable STEP/MAT/AEA question database organised by A Level chapter — excellent for enrichment alongside exam preparation.
Best for: Interactive practice with instant feedback, plus a bridge to university admissions test preparation via the STEP/MAT database.
Integral Maths (MEI) ★★★★☆
The deepest Further Maths coverage available on any platform. High-quality written notes with worked examples, self-marking tests, GeoGebra-based interactive walkthroughs, and teacher analytics. State schools in England can apply for up to 5 free accounts.
Best for: The gold standard for structured FM resources, especially for OCR MEI students. Worth the subscription if you want the most thorough digital content available.
Practice Papers
Further Maths has fewer official past papers than standard A Level Maths. These independent sources are essential for thorough preparation.
| Source | Boards | FM Modules | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|
| MadAsMaths IYGB | Edexcel-style | FP1, FP2, FP4, FM2, Synoptic | Largest free FM paper collection. Papers graded A–R (standard) and S–T (extremely hard). |
| crashMATHS | AQA, Edexcel, OCR | Core Pure, FP, FM | Board-specific papers with full mark schemes |
| JethwaMaths | Edexcel-style | Core Pure (options coming) | Practice papers + 10-minute starters |
| Solomon Press | Edexcel (old spec) | FP1–FP3, FM1–FM3, FS1–FS3 | Old-spec but still useful for topic practice |

Enrichment & University Preparation
Resources that go beyond the A Level syllabus, developing the problem-solving skills needed for competitive university admissions and mathematical competitions.
TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission)
The TMUA is now the single most important admissions test for maths applicants in the UK, used by Cambridge, Oxford (from 2026 entry), Imperial, LSE, and other universities. It replaces the MAT for Oxford admissions.
The test consists of two papers of 20 multiple-choice questions each (75 minutes per paper). Paper 1 tests mathematical thinking; Paper 2 tests mathematical reasoning and logic. Free preparation resources include past papers (2019–2024), test specification, and the essential “Notes on Logic and Proof” document.
Best for: All students applying to study maths or related subjects at competitive universities.
STEP Support Programme
Developed by the University of Cambridge to prepare students for STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper), required for offers to study Mathematics at Cambridge. The programme includes structured Foundation Modules (designed to be studied weekly over ~6 months, starting in Year 12), a searchable STEP Question Database (all questions from 1986–2018), and fully worked solutions.
A progressive hints system reveals guidance step by step before showing full solutions. Excellent even for students not taking STEP — the programme develops extended problem-solving skills that distinguish A* Further Maths students.
Best for: Cambridge applicants and any FM student who wants to develop deep problem-solving skills beyond exam technique.
NRICH
Curriculum-linked enrichment resources developed by the Cambridge Millennium Mathematics Project. Includes investigations, problems, articles, and games. Emphasis on mathematical thinking and problem-solving rather than exam technique. “Live problems” allow students to submit solutions for publication.
Best for: Developing the problem-solving mindset needed for STEP, TMUA, and BMO.
MAT note: Oxford has replaced the MAT with the TMUA from 2026 entry onwards. MAT past papers (2007–2024) remain an excellent enrichment resource — the problem-solving skills they test are similar to those in the TMUA.
BMO: The British Mathematical Olympiad past papers (free) offer proof-based problems that develop rigorous mathematical reasoning well beyond A Level. Entry is by invitation from the Senior Mathematical Challenge.
